Volunteering with VSA
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced Radiographer or Medical Imagery professional, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with the Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH)then read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation -
The Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH) in Luganville, Espiritu Santo, is the second-largest hospital in Vanuatu, serving as the main referral centre for the Northern Provinces: Sanma, Malampa, Torba, and Penama. With over 100 beds, it provides paediatric, general medical, surgical, obstetric, and gynaecological services, along with a busy outpatient and emergency department. In December 2023, NPH received a Fuji Innovality Mammogram Unit and PACS system for storing and accessing medical images, donated by JICA.

To maximise the impact of this equipment, the radiology staff require training in operating the mammogram machine and using the PACS system for sharing and interpreting images. This training will enhance early breast cancer detection, improve patient record-keeping, and strengthen communication between NPH and Vila Central Hospital. Ultimately, this initiative aims to improve health outcomes for women across the Northern Provinces.

The Assignment
This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA, and Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH).

The assignment focuses on supporting the Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH) in utilising its newly donated Fuji Innovality Mammogram Unit and PACS system. The volunteer will provide essential training and mentoring to medical imaging staff, radiographers, and junior doctors, ensuring they are confident in operating the mammogram machine and managing the PACS database. This will involve running workshops, improving radiology procedures, and enhancing staff skills in image interpretation and report writing.

By building staff capacity, the volunteer will help increase the number of breast cancer screenings and improve patient information management. The role also involves strengthening collaboration between NPH and Vila Central Hospital (VCH) to ensure effective sharing of medical images and records. Ultimately, the volunteer's work will contribute to better diagnostic services and health outcomes for women in Luganville and the wider Northern Provinces.

The Country
Vanuatu is situated on a volcanic archipelago of 86 islands where traditional lifestyles exist side by side with modern tourist resorts. Around 110 indigenous languages are still spoken by an average of only 2,000 people per language, making it the country with the highest density of languages per capita in the world.

The majority of people living in Vanuatu are Melanesian. It is a predominantly Christian country. Vanuatu culture retains a strong diversity derived from regional variations and an adherence to kastom (traditional practices and lifestyles).

Vanuatu's economy is primarily agriculture-based and engages approximately 80 per cent of the population. Copra, kava and beef make up more than 75 per cent of total agricultural exports, with agriculture accounting for around 20 per cent of GDP.
