Volunteering with VSA
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced hospitality or healthcare food service manager, with large-scale kitchen experience, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with the National Referral Hospital in Honiarathen read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation - National Referral Hospital
The National Referral Hospital (NRH) in the Solomon Islands is the country’s primary healthcare facility, providing essential medical services to the population. The hospital plays a central role in delivering patient care and ensuring efficient operations across its departments. To enhance its services, NRH seeks to improve the management of its kitchen, focusing on reducing waste, optimising resources, and maintaining high standards of hygiene and food safety. The hospital’s leadership is dedicated to implementing effective systems and processes to better serve patients and staff, supporting the broader mission of improving healthcare outcomes in the region.

The Assignment
This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA, and the National Referral Hospital with a focus on improving kitchen management systems.

The volunteer will collaborate closely with the Kitchen Manager and Hospital Secretary to identify and enhance purchasing, storage, and inventory practices. Key responsibilities include conducting audits of equipment and storage, developing efficient food procurement plans, and creating guidelines for hygiene, sanitation, and infection control. The volunteer will also provide templates and tools for effective reporting and budget management.

In addition to identifying areas for improvement, the volunteer will support staff through training, mentoring, and capacity building to ensure the adoption of new systems and processes. By enhancing the kitchen’s efficiency and eliminating waste, this role aims to help the hospital leadership make informed decisions and improve overall service delivery, contributing to better healthcare outcomes for the community.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:

  •  Qualification in restaurant management or related fields
  •  In-depth knowledge of kitchen health and safety rules and regulations
  •  Experience in developing and reviewing policies related to kitchen operations.
The Country
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.

A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.

VSA has established a strong presence in Solomon Islands through its ongoing partnerships with multiple in-country partners, including strong relationships with Solomon Islands Government.
