Volunteering with VSA

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced nurse professional, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with the National Referral Hospitalthen read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation -
The National Referral Hospital (NRH) is the primary provider of secondary and tertiary healthcare services in the Solomon Islands, serving the entire population of the country. With 49 departments and units, including emerging subspecialties such as ICU, cardiac care, renal, ENT, and dermatology, the NRH plays a critical role in patient care, corporate services, and public health initiatives.

As the country’s leading hospital, the NRH admits around 14,000 patients annually and supports the professional development of nurses through its dedicated nursing education programme. With approximately 300 beds, the hospital operates below the national average of 0.4 beds per 1,000 people, underscoring the need for ongoing improvements to meet Universal Health Coverage goals.

The NRH is looking for a volunteer to assist in enhancing the professional development of nurses, helping to strengthen the quality of healthcare provided across the Solomon Islands.

The Assignment
This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA, and National Referral Hospital.  We are seeking a volunteer to support the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in enhancing nursing professional development. Working closely with nursing education staff and the Nursing Director, you will help develop systems and procedures for ongoing professional development tailored to nurses across different wards.
Key responsibilities include reviewing current processes, creating context-specific plans that can be implemented with minimal resources, and providing train-the-trainer support to ensure sustainability. Your contribution will help build capacity and strengthen nursing care at the NRH.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:

  •  Bachelor of Nursing degree
  •  3 years + professional experience in nursing
  •  Experience working in surgical and medical wards
  • Experience providing training or mentoring others on the job
The Country
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.

A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.
