Volunteering with VSA

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced law professional, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with the High Court of the Solomon Islands, then read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation
The High Court of Solomon Islands presides over serious criminal and civil cases. It also has appellate jurisdiction, hearing appeals from the magistrates' courts and from the Customary Land Appeal Court. The Chief Justice presides over the High Court along with a team of eight judges. Each judge has an associate and an executive assistant. Current associates do not have legal training and perform mostly administrative tasks required by judges.

The Assignment
A VSA volunteer is required to work alongside judges at the High Court to understand the type of support they require from an associate and the support required to upskills current associates. Areas of focus include file management, development of resources that will result in reduction of time it takes to deliver
rulings from hearings and ensuring that associates have the relevant skills to support judges effectively.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:

  • Sound academic background in law with experience of court processes
  • Legal research skills and an understanding of international best practice
  • Prior experience mentoring and coaching people
The Country
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.

A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.

VSA has established a strong presence in Solomon Islands through its ongoing partnerships with multiple in-country partners, including strong relationships with Solomon Islands Government.
