Buin High School (BHS) was established in 1968.
It is located on the edge of Buin town centre in South Bougainville.
It is a boarding school with student population of 700 and teaching staff of 34.
Under particularly difficult circumstances during and after the Crisis (including the ongoing Konnou crisis), Buin was largely cut off from other main towns. Despite this Buin High School has become one of the leading secondary institutions in the ARoB, with places for students highly sought after.
VSA has been working with Buin High School since 2018, with volunteers previously supporting in administration and finance.
The leadership and staff of Buin High School are motivated and highly receptive to VSA support.
The Assignment
This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA and Buin High School (through the Autonomous Bougainville Government Department of Education).
In this assignment, a VSA Volunteer with skills and experience in teaching English would provide a significant opportunity for knowledge transfer and capacity building, supporting Buin High School with their goal of improving student’s English results.
Buin High School has identified that their students have low understanding and application of English.
This has resulted in low English results for Buin High School on the Papua New Guinea national secondary school academic scale.
A long-term goal of Buin High School is to improve this rating by improving written and oral/conversational English.
Central to this goal is upskilling the current English teachers at Buin High School so that they are better equipped to support students.

VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.
We're looking for a volunteer with the following:
The Autonomous Region of Bougainville, previously known as the North Solomons, comprises Buka, Bougainville, and other small outlying islands. Bougainville is situated in the Solomon Sea between Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Solomon Islands, and the capital city is Buka. While most Bougainvilleans are Melanesian, the people of Takuu and Nukuman islands are Polynesian.

- Experience working in the Pacific, or with Pacific communities.
