This is your opportunity to become a VSA Volunteer to share your experience, skills and knowledge to serve and build capacity in the Solomon Islands. Work alongside our local partner organisation to plan and create a brighter future for all.

We are looking for an experienced Web Development Adviser or someone with the right level of transferrable skills, who understands and shares the spirit of volunteering, with a keen interest in building capability in the Pacific (while embracing a new cultural experience).

The length of this assignment in the Solomon Islands will be 8- months.

VSA will support you by funding and organizing your flights, visas, insurances, accommodation, living allowance and utilities while you are on assignment.

• Experience in developing websites.
• Experience developing and designing hardcopy and online promotional materials
• Experience developing and implementing digital marketing strategies, preferably in relation to tourism.

Important note

: Due to our VSA funding requirements, our volunteers must be a NZ citizen or NZ Permanent Resident to progress further in our recruitment process.

Our Partner Organisation – Western Provincial Government The Western Provincial Government (WPG) has been operating since 1978 when the country became independent. The province has its own Provincial Government Administration head by a Clerk. The role of the WPG is to develop the province, particularly rural areas. Planning is an important part of the WPG’s activities as this helps to ensure that development occurs in a considered manner.

The Western Province was identified by the Solomon Islands Government as an area of significant tourism growth. The New Zealand Government has invested significantly in an airport in Munda which was constructed to international standards. Investment opportunities related to tourism have also been identified due to Western Province’s unique placement within the Coral Triangle. The Coral Triangle is unique and important because it is home to the highest concentration of marine species on the planet. The Coral Triangle, often called “the Nursery of the seas”, is home to 600 corals or 76% of the world’s known coral species. It contains the highest reef fish diversity with 2,500 or 37% of the world’s reef fish species. With a population of 365 million and sustaining more than 130 million people living in coastal communities who rely directly on the marine ecosystems for their livelihoods and food, the marine habitats of the Coral Triangle also contribute an estimated US$2.3 billion each year towards the economies of the region.

The Assignment 

This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA and the Western Provincial Government (WPG).

WPG does not have a website. The provincial government would like to develop one that promotes tourism and investment opportunities. WPG has an IT Officer who, if supported, could learn how to do web maintenance. Staff throughout the organisation will be able to support with information required to keep the website current. There is a website that has been developed for tourism operators. This website needs to be completed.

WPG is seeking a volunteer to assist in the development of a comprehensive website that highlights the organization’s services and initiatives. The role will involve building staff capacity to ensure that, upon completion, the team can independently manage and maintain the website with ease. In addition, the volunteer will be responsible for finalizing outstanding elements of the tourism section, ensuring that attractions and operators in Gizo and the surrounding areas are accurately represented and effectively showcased.

The Country – The Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.

A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.

VSA has established a strong presence in Solomon Islands through its ongoing partnerships with multiple in-country partners, including strong relationships with Solomon Islands Government.
