This is your opportunity to become a VSA Volunteer to share your experience, skills and knowledge to serve and build capacity in Papua New Guinea. Work alongside our local partner organisation to plan and create a brighter future for all.

We are looking for an experiencedDigital Literacy & Learning Technologies Mentor or someone with the right level of transferrable skills, who understands and shares the spirit of volunteering, with a keen interest in building capability in the Pacific (while embracing a new cultural experience).

The length of this assignment in the Papua New Guinea will be 9 months.

VSA will support you by funding and organizing your flights, visas, insurances, accommodation, living allowance and utilities while you are on assignment.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role

If you are interested in this opportunity, below are some of the key skills and experiences that we’re looking for.

• A recognised tertiary qualification in education, educational technology, digital learning, information management, ICT in education, library and information studies, or a related field. 
• At least 3 years’ experience supporting teaching and learning, digital literacy, educational technology integration, or student learning support within higher education, teacher education, or training environments.  
• Demonstrated understanding of digital literacy, blended learning, online educational resources, and the practical application of learning technologies in educational settings 
• Experience providing mentoring, coaching, training, or professional development support to staff, students, or colleagues. 
• Ability to work collaboratively with academic staff and institutional stakeholders to strengthen digital learning practices and technology integration within teacher education programmes.
• Strong communication, facilitation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deliver practical workshops and support capacity-strengthening initiatives.

Our Partner Organisation – St Peter Chanel Catholic College of Secodary Teacher Education (Ulapia)

The Assignment 

St. Peter Chanel Catholic College of Secondary Teacher Education plays an important role in preparing secondary school teachers for schools across Papua New Guinea. As the College strengthens its teacher education programmes, it has identified the need to strengthen institutional capacity in digital literacy, expand access to digital educational resources, and improve the integration of learning technologies in teaching and learning.

Digital technologies are increasingly important in schools and higher education, and future teachers are expected to confidently use digital tools for teaching, research, communication, and professional development. However, many staff and trainee teachers have had limited opportunities to build practical skills and confidence in educational technologies and digital learning systems.

To address this priority, the College, in partnership with Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA), is seeking a Digital Literacy and Learning Technologies Mentor. The mentor will work collaboratively with academic staff, library personnel, ICT support staff, and college leadership to strengthen institutional capacity in digital learning and educational technology integration.

The assignment will focus on practical mentoring, coaching, and capacity strengthening to support the effective use of digital teaching resources, blended and online learning approaches, digital library services, and the development of digital learning materials and training activities suited to the local context.

Through this collaborative approach, the assignment aims to strengthen staff capability, improve access to educational resources, enhance teaching and learning practices, and support sustainable digital literacy and learning technology development across the College. Ultimately, this will contribute to improved graduate quality and better teaching and learning outcomes in secondary schools throughout Papua New Guinea.

The Country – Papua New Guinea

Most people living in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are Melanesian, but some are Micronesian or Polynesian. PNG has over 800 known languages although there are three official languages: Tok Pisin, English, and Hiri Motu. Numerous indigenous languages are still used by people from a society that ranges from traditional village-based life to modern urban living.

Underlying the Papua New Guinean culture is the wantok system. Wantok, or ‘one talk’, refers to the people who speak your language or your extended family/clan; a Papua New Guinean’s primary loyalty will be to their wantok.

The country is predominately Christian, with indigenous faith and spirituality still important to many locals.

The people of Papua New Guinea are famously warm and hospitable and the isolated mountain ranges are often home to unique fauna and flora found nowhere else in the world.
