About VSA and the Project

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is New Zealand's largest and most experienced volunteering agency working in international development. We partner with communities in the Pacific and beyond to share skills and build capacity.

We are undertaking a qualitative research project to understand the impact and experience of our volunteer programme. This study focuses on two key areas:

1. Public Diplomacy & Development Contribution: How VSA volunteering fosters understanding of New Zealand’s aid and strengthens people-to-people links between New Zealand and partner countries.
2. The Volunteer Journey: How volunteers grow personally and professionally, and how VSA’s services and programme can be improved.

As an intern, you will play a vital role in analysing the rich stories and experiences shared by our volunteers, turning raw data into meaningful insights.

The Opportunity

This is a unique, hands-on internship for a graduate or post-graduate student seeking practical experience in qualitative research within the international development and volunteer sector. You will be embedded in our research team, gaining direct experience in coding, thematic analysis, and contributing to a report that will shape future programmes. The paid internship offers substantial professional development and the chance to contribute to meaningful work with a leading NGO.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the International Development and Insights Manager, you will:

• Assist in the systematic organisation and management of qualitative data sets (primarily transcribed interviews and focus groups with former volunteers).
• Conduct thematic coding and analysis using software (i.e. Taguette) to identify key patterns, narratives, and insights related to the research questions.
• Support the drafting of analysis summaries, visualisations of themes, and contribute to sections of the final research report.
• Help maintain the integrity and confidentiality of all sensitive research data.
• Participate in team meetings to discuss findings and interpretations.
• Potentially assist in preparing presentations or briefs to communicate research findings to internal stakeholders.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate (within 12 months) of a relevant postgraduate degree (e.g., International Development, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Public Policy, Evaluation, or a related social science field).
• Demonstrated coursework or experience in qualitative research methods and thematic analysis.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to identify patterns in narrative data.
• Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to summarise complex information clearly and concisely.
• High level of cultural sensitivity and an understanding of ethical research practices.
• Self-motivated, organised, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Desirable:

• Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software (e.g. Taguette).
• An understanding of international development or volunteerism.
• Personal experience with international volunteering, cross-cultural work, or living abroad.
