The Ministry of Labour, Commerce and Industries (MLCI) was established in 1973 to adminster matters relating to labour, commerce, trade and industrial development. Its role is to help Tonga towards creating a sustainable and competitive business environment. Among other things the Ministry provides high quality advice to government on business, investment, trade and labour matters and provides cost effective services to facilitate private sector economic development.

Looking forward its goals over the next five years are to promote business and stronger private sector development, facilitate investments, target sector support towards rural and regional communities, undertake government reforms, deliver continuity of statutory and policy responsibilities.
