Plan International (Plan) is a global independent development and humanitarian organisation. Plan posits that there is nowhere in the world where girls are treated as equals. As such, they work alongside children, young people, supporters and partners to tackle root causes of the injustices facing girls and the most marginalised children.
Plan first entered Bougainville in 2015, as one of five INGO’s to implement the Australian-funded Bougainville Youth Initiative (BYI). The BYI aimed to increase the positive social, economic and political participation of youth in Bougainville’s affairs across its three regions.
The goals of the BYI were:
- Economic development: to give young people the skills and capacities they need to contribute to improve their livelihoods which includes providing knowledge, life skills and linkages so that young people can find work, start small businesses or get involved in agriculture; and
- Social development: to increase opportunities for young men and women to participate more and show leadership in their communities and in government affairs.
