Inspire others and help improve the quality of mathematics education for trainee maths teachers across the East New Britain.
Papua New Guinea has a widespread low level of mathematics achievement which affects the numerical literacy needed for ongoing development of the country. Secondary school maths teachers need help improving mathematical fluency, reasoning and conceptual understanding to ensure they provide quality teaching upon graduation.
St. Peter Chanel Catholic College of Secondary Education, an innovative, new training institution, needs a volunteer to help it enhance its Mathematics programme. They are after someone who has solid mathematics and secondary teaching skills and knowledge, and a great ability to relate to people from all walks of life. Excellent communication skills combined with a good amount of patience and flexibility will also be important for success in this role.
As Mathematics Teaching Adviser you will work collaboratively with staff to review current mathematics teaching practices, helping to improve instructional materials or resources and delivery strategies as needed. You will also provide mentoring to St Peter Chanel Mathematics teaching staff to instruct and support trainee maths teachers to improve in their coursework. The role also involves an important community outreach component, where you will work with maths teachers from secondary schools in the province to help improve their teaching practices.
Reporting to Head of Mathematics and the College CEO you will have the opportunity to make an real impact on the college and wider community.
We are looking for a volunteer with:
- A degree-level qualification in mathematics or a related subject
- At least three years' experience teaching mathematics at secondary school level
- Ability to provide mentoring and coaching support to colleagues
