The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource Development (MFMRD) is responsible for sustainable development of the fisheries and marine and resources of Kiribati.  A National Fisheries Policy (2013 – 2025) has been developed which aims to support economic growth, provide job opportunities and ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods for the people of Kiribati.

In this assignment you will work with the Coastal Fisheries Division (CFD) staff in a community engagement capacity.  Through training and coaching you will support staff to reach out to communities across Tarawa to ensure they are informed about fisheries regulations and laws, and that they understand their responsibilities.  Key to this role will be empowering communities to support compliance and surveillance of fisheries activity.

Although you’ll be based at the MRMRD office in Tarawa, there will be opportunities to travel to outer islands and meet with communities throughout all of Kiribati.

We are looking for a volunteer with:

  • Qualification or equivalent experience in Community Development or a related field
  • Experience delivering community engagement and outreach programmes
  • Experience delivering training workshops
  • Experience developing training materials

VSA volunteers receive a living allowance and accommodation, insurance, and medical costs are provided. Travel arrangements are organised and funded by VSA along with other costs.
