OHAI Incorporated is a not for profit organisation that promotes climate change awareness and mitigation throughout Tongatapu. It aims to build resilient communities and has a particular focus on developing and coaching youth. Recently, it has commenced a community beekeeping project.
In this assignment you will initially work with a local beekeeper and a few key community members to build their capacity and knowledge. Your focus will be establishing bee hives for both pollination purposes (food crops) and the production of honey. Key to this assignment will also be upskilling community members around maintenance and safety of the hives. Once the hives have been established, there will be scope to work with local training organisation, Tonga Skills, to develop and implement a training course in beekeeping.
This is a 1-year assignment where you’ll be working alongside an organisation striving to promote food security and climate change resilience. There’ll be plenty of outdoor field work with the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Tongan landscape every day!
We are looking for a volunteer with:
- Extensive experience as a beekeeper
- Experience constructing, establishing, and maintaining healthy colonies in beehives
- Experience extracting honey.
