Our Partner Organisation - Northern Provincial Hospital
Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH) in Luganville is the second largest hospital in Vanuatu. It serves Vanuatu’s northern islands. The hospital has just over 100 beds spread over Medicine, Surgery,Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and TB wards, as well as hosting Outpatients, X-Ray, laboratory and limited ultrasound facilities. 

The hospital has a collegiate relationship with many charitable overseas organisations receiving specialist volunteer doctors and aid from overseas countries, notably Australia, New Zealand, and China.

The Assignment
A VSA Volunteer is needed to focus on improving maternal health at several levels; working with midwives and nurses to provide care to women and babies and advocating for best practice family planning services and providing support to the clinical services in the Neo Natal unit.  The VSA Volunteer will build capacity also through working alongside nurses, midwives, medical staff, and the family health organisations.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be patient, flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community. 

We're looking for a volunteer with the following essential skills and experience:

  • A Midwifery Qualification (NZMC Registered and current Practicing Certificate) or a Nursing Qualification with midwifery as specialisation.
  • Experienced in providing family planning advice and guidance.
  • Leadership
  • Management skills
  • Facilitation or training skills
  • Specialised maternal issues.
  • Counselling and excelling communications skills is desired.
A willingness to learn Bislama is desired.

The Country 
Vanuatu is situated on a volcanic archipelago of 86 islands where traditional lifestyles exist side by side with modern tourist resorts. Around 110 indigenous languages are still spoken by an average of only 2,000 people per language, making it the country with the highest density of languages per capita in the world. 

The majority of people living in Vanuatu are Melanesian. It is a predominantly Christian country. Vanuatu culture retains a strong diversity derived from regional variations and an adherence to kastom (traditional practices and lifestyles).

Plan which prioritises social and economic development, as well as economic 
growth, with a vision of a stable, sustainable and prosperous Vanuatu. The
