Volunteering with VSA
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency.  We are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced anaesthetist, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific – then read on, as we have a life changing opportunity in store for you working collaboratively with the medical staff of the Northern Provincial Hospital in Vanuatu.

Our Partner Organisation
The Northern Provincial Hospital (NPH) based in Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo (Santo) is the second largest hospital in Vanuatu with just over 100 beds. It serves as the main referral centre for the Northern provinces namely Malampa, Torba and Penama. As such it has a significant catchment area and is the main referral centre for emergencies within the Luganville Municipality and Sanma Province. NPH provides paediatric, general medical, general surgical, obstetric/gynaecological services as well as a very busy out-patient and Emergency Department.

The Assignment
To provide safe, high-quality and effective anaesthesiology care to all people using the Northern Provincial Hospital theatre services to ensure improved departmental processes/systems and improved anaesthesia skills and knowledge amongst the anaesthetic team and junior doctors.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:
  • Fellowship in Anaesthesiology
  • Extensive work experience in the field of anaesthesiology
  • Teaching and mentoring skills
  • Willing to apply for Medical Council approval in Vanuatu (paid for and organised by NPH) and a certificate of good standing from the Medical Council in NZ (MCNZ)
Experience working in rural or remote settings with significant resource constraints is desirable.

The Country
Vanuatu is situated on a volcanic archipelago of 86 islands where traditional lifestyles exist side by side with modern tourist resorts. Around 110 indigenous languages are still spoken by an average of only 2,000 people per language, making it the country with the highest density of languages per capita in the world.  The majority of people living in Vanuatu are Melanesian. It is a predominantly Christian country. Vanuatu culture retains a strong diversity derived from regional variations and an adherence to kastom (traditional practices and lifestyles).

Vanuatu's economy is primarily agriculture-based and engages approximately 80 per cent of the population. Copra, kava and beef make up more than 75 per cent of total agricultural exports, with agriculture accounting for around 20 per cent of GDP.

The VSA programme strategy for Vanuatu is guided by Vanuatu 2030 The People’s Plan which prioritises social and economic development, as well as economic growth, with a vision of a stable, sustainable and prosperous Vanuatu. The Plan focuses on improving the wellbeing of the people (society); protecting and enhancing the environment and maximising opportunities for shared prosperity.
