The Assignment

In this assignment a VSA volunteer will provide support alongside ERLTC staff supporting adult students to improve their literacy, numeracy and computing skills.

A VSA volunteer will contribute by improving the capacity and capabilities of instructors through upskilling, mentoring and training as well as through teaching some valuable life skills to students.

The Country - Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, is a diverse and culturally rich nation known for its stunning natural beauty and linguistic diversity, with over 800 indigenous languages spoken.  Its landscape encompasses dense rainforests, rugged mountains, and pristine beaches.  The country's unique tribal cultures continue to thrive, making it one of the most culturally diverse places on Earth.  While facing challenges like economic development and infrastructure, Papua New Guinea's people are known for their warmth and hospitality, making it a captivating and vibrant destination for VSA volunteers.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be patient, flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

Our ideal volunteer will have the following skills and experience:

  • A qualification in education, adult education and/or NCALNE.
  • Significant teaching experience in a tertiary/adult education context.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult literacy, numeracy, computer literacy and curriculum development.
  • Experience in training the trainers or evidence of capacity building of teaching staff.
  • Proficient in the use and teaching of Microsoft Office.
Evidence of applying Māori and Pasifika frameworks to teaching contexts would be desirable.

To volunteer successfully in Papua New Guinea, you will need a positive "can do" attitude, a willingness to learn and use Tok Pisin, and comfortable living simply within a local community.
