Our Partner Organisation - Lenakel Hospital

Lenakel Hospital is the main Ministry of Health hospital forTafea provinceand is located on the largest island of Tanna in the town of Lenakel.

The hospital services the four surrounding islands Erromango, Aniwa, Futuna and Aneityum, serving a population of approximately 36,000people.

The Hospital provides 24/7 acute care and outpatient clinics for the local population as well as providing outreach clinics to meet the needs of more remote communities.

The hospital has 40beds and approximately 75 staff. There are outlying aid posts and dispensaries on the island that provide basic primary health care to the community and the resources are supplied from Lenakel Hospital.

The Assignment

In this assignment a VSA volunteer will work with the local Paediatric team to document via survey, the prevalence of malnutrition in children and infants in Tanna–due to limited access to the hospital for the majority of the population, this survey is necessary to get a true idea of the scale of the problem.

The volunteer will then work alongside the Paediatric Malnutrition Nurse to develop educational resources to better communicate and inform parents and patients about nutrition.

This will be supported by the volunteer working alongside the kitchen staff to assist in the development of more nutritious meals being served to all patients.

You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community. 

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:


 • A registered dietician with the NZ dieticians board and hold a current Annual practicing certificate

• Experience working specifically with children

• At least 24 months work experience in either aprimary or secondary health      care facility
