Part of Vanuatu’s rich history is its involvement in World War II, where the Island of Espiritu Santo was used by American naval air forces as a military base. The importance of the base during the war can still be seen in the infrastructure that is left behind as many of the buildings and facilities built during the war are still used today. The presence of the Americans also eventually contributed to an increase in tourism as they dumped most of their used naval equipment at ‘Million Dollar Point’, which has now become a very popular site for scuba diving.
To further strengthen this link of history and tourism the Elwood J Euart Association was set up in 2012. Their aim was to develop a world class WWII museum that preserves and takes pride in this important part of history. The museum also hopes to provide employment for ni-Vanuatu, educate the community and its school children, and further increase tourism.
