FORCERT is a local not-for-profit service company in Papua New Guinea, supporting village communities in their sustainable forest management. Interested communities are assisted to do their own sustainable land use and village development planning. These village communities, often consisting of a number of clans, organize themselves in a business group or cooperative to run their forest management company. This village enterprise then signs a contract with FORCERT and commits itself to work in accordance with FSC & Fair Trade standards.
FORCERT is established with support of Greenpeace and WWF, with both organisations being a shareholder in the company. The majority shareholding in FORCERT rests with the combined village enterprises, who receive a share in the FORCERT company once they reach their FSC status.
