Buka General Hospital operates as part of the PNG National Health System, whereas the several Health Centres and outposts throughout Bougainville are administered by the Bougainville Division of Health.

Buka General Hospital (BGH) opened in 1998, becoming the provincial hospital and main referral centre for Bougainville, following the destruction of Arawa Hospital during the Bougainville crisis.  It provides over 10 different clinical services including A&E, paediatrics and surgery, as well as a newly established family support centre.

Buka Hospital provides the following Clinical Services — Out Patient Department / A&E, Surgery Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Paediatric, Medical, Anaesthetic, Dental and Psychiatric Units. Diagnostic Services include Medical Imaging and a Laboratory.  Support Services include Pharmaceutical and Blood Transfusion services and an Operating Theatre.  The Family Support Centre will become another service the hospital offers.
